Note: The town lies along the Mandel River, south of Brugge in the Belgian province of West-Vlaanderen. It has been an important linen market since medieval times. It was the site of a major French victory over the Austrians in 1794. The constructions in 1872 of a canal linking it to the Leie River lead to industrial growth. Heavily damaged during World War I, it retains some notable architecture such as the Church of St. Michael, built 1497-1504, with a 17th-century carved pulpit, and the town hall and the Seminary Church, both built in the 18th century. The town is noted as birthplace of poet A Rodenbach and 16th-century composer Adriaan Willaert. The 2003 estimated population was about 54,800. |
