Note: The city of Cuxhaven is located in Lower Saxony in northwestern Germany on the North Sea coast at the mouth of the Elbe River. It was an important medieval center. It was conquered by Hamburg in 1394 and served as its fore port until 1937. It received its charter only in 1907. Heavily damaged in World War I, it retains little historic architecture. It does have a 14th-century lighthouse, the oldest in Germany, and the 14th-century castle of Ritzebüttel, which now houses a museum. The city is a major fishing, fish processing, and shipbuilding port. It is also a noted beach resort and health spa. The 2004 estimated population was 53,000.
