Note: The city of Neubrandenburg is located near the northern end of Tollense Lake. It was founded as a fortified outpost by the margraves of Brandenburg in 1248. It went to Mecklenburg in 1292, and from 1352 to 1471 it served as the capital of the duchy of Mecklenburg-Stargard. It prospered in that position, becoming a market center and a center for woven goods. There followed a long decline caused by the havoc of the Thirty Years' War, catastrophic fires in 1679 and in 1737, and the destruction wrought by the Napoleonic Wars. It came on again somewhat in the late 19th century, but was badly damaged in World War II, when bombing destroyed nearly all of its remaining medieval structures. Today all that remains of its architectural heritage are the medieval fortifications. Its industries include agricultural machinery, chemicals, paper, leather, and wood products. The 2004 estimated population was 69,100.
