Note: The city of Schwerin is situated on a lake, the Schweriner See, southwest of Rostock in the northeast German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, of which it serves as the capitol. Originally a Wendish settlement, the German town was founded by the Saxon duke Henry the Lion in the 12th century. It went to Mecklenburg in 1358. Its inhabitants accepted the Reformation in 1524. From 1624 to 1631 imperial troops occupied it during the Thirty Years' War. T prospered and gained importance over the centuries, often serving as the capitol of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. From 1952 to 1990 it was the capitol of the DDR district of Schwerin. It has retained some of its historic architecture, notably the Gothic cathedral, begun in 1270 and only completed in 1890. There are also the dukes' palace, 1843-57, and the palace church built in 1560-63. Local industries include food processing, pharmaceuticals, plastics, wood products, and cigarettes. The 2004 estimated population was 97,700. |
