It served as a prosperous iron production center in medieval times, and joined the Hanseatic League. It fell under Brandenburgian rule in 1609, passed to Prussia in 1815. A large town-wide fire severely damaged it in 1723. It has an old town with a church tower dating from 1072 at its center, and the moated castle of Neuenhof.
