Note: The town lies along the Meuse River, six miles upstream from Liège It was founded by English industrialist, John Cockerill, in 1817 near the site of an old Cistercian abbey which today is the site of one of the largest glassworks in Europe; It became the center of Belgium's steel, iron, glass-making, and machine-making industries. It is noted as the site of the construction in 1835 of the first steam locomotive on the Continent. Its 2003 estimated population was 60,600.
