Note: Originally an ancient settlement on the caravan route from India and Afghanistan to Bukhara and Samarkand, Qarshi lies in an oasis on the Kashka River. Present-day Qarshi is a railroad junction, with its primary industries being the processing of agricultural materials, and the production of pileless carpets. When the Qarshi steppe was irrigated in the 1960s, the population of the city of Qarshi doubled.
