Note: The city of Mostar is located in mountainous area on the Neretva River in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The former capital of Herzegovina, its name derives from the Serbo-Croatian "Stari Most" meaning "Old Bridge." The Turks absorbed it into the Ottoman Empire in the 1500s, and in 1566 built a stone bridge with a single arch 90 feet wide. Mostar figured significantly in Herzegovina's rise against the Turks in 1875. It was ruled by Austria between 1878 and 1918, and was the intellectual center for the Serbian nationalist movement at that time. In 1993 during the Bosnian civil war, the old stone bridge was destroyed by Croatian artillery fire. It was rebuilt by local craftsmen, using 16th-century methods and tools, and reopened with great celebration in July 2004. The area around Mostar is renowned for its high-quality wines, fruit, tobacco, and vegetables. There is an aluminum plant processing local ore, and a university founded in 1977. The 2004 estimated population was 94,100. |
