Note: Ancient site located on an elevated a granite outcrop; was frequented by semi-nomadic people; the earliest settlement here is dated to the 2nd millennium BCE. Noted for rock edicts of Emperor Ashoka, which names the place as "Isila" and notes that it marks the southern boundary of the Mauryan empire, and for the many megalithic monuments and distinctive black-and-red pottery. Legend has it that this is the site where age Gautama Maharishi (also spelt Gauthama Maharshi) and his wife Ahalya lived. He was one among seven noted Hindu saints (Saptharshi mandalam).
