Note: Located on the northeast side of a limestone rock formation, 3 km south of Kalambaka. Has radiocarbon evidence of of human presence dating to 50,000 years ago. It is a unique prehistoric site for Greece, as the Middle and Upper Paleolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods are present here, bridging the Pleistocene and Holocene. Among the notable finds here are two human skeletons and the remains of a remarkably early wall (23,000 years ago) located in front of the cave entrance, presumably built to protect the inhabitants from the elements. |
