Note: Large and ancient settlement, occupied as early as 1200 BCE. Flourished during Maya Classic period, with monuments dated 485-889 CE, including a valuable record of the dynastic sequence of the rulers. Was apparently a rival of Tikal. At its peak, the population of Caracol may have been 180,000. Contains hieroglyphic inscriptions.
