Note: Located on the southern Dalmatian coast, the city was ruled by Byzantium after the fall of Rome. It was an independent trade city nominally under the rule of Venice, Turkey, and Hungary from 1205 to 1808. In 1808, the city was taken by Napoleon, later to be given to Austria in 1814. Eventually, it became part of Yugoslavia, then independent Croatia. The Old City of Dubrovnik was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979. |
