Note: The city of Arnsberg, the capital of the district of Arnsberg in the west-central German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen, is located on a loop of the Ruhr River. Founded in 1077 at the site of a pre-existing castle, it served as the seat of the counts of Werlin from the 11th century, receiving its charter in 1238. It became a member of Hanseatic League, and the seat of the Westphalian Vehmir counts from the 15th century. It was the site of secret tribunals ("Vehmgericht") that usurped functions of the government. Notable for the ruins of the old Werlin castle and the church of Wedinghausen Abbey, it is a vacation resort and spa, known as the "Pearl of the Sauerland." Industries include brewing, paper milling, and the manufacture of metal products. The 2004 estimated population was 77,100.
