Note: Located in the northwest on the Syr Darya river, Khuŭjand is one of the oldest cities in the region, and a stop along the Silk Road. The city was taken by the Arabs in the 8th century, and again by Genghis Khan in the 1220. In the 19th century it was part of the Kokand khanate under Persian control. In 1866, the Russians gained control of the city. Its industries include silk, cotton, and canning. |
