Note: Gīlān is located in the northwestern region of Iran with Tehrān to the south, Zanjān to the southwest, and Māzandarān to the east. It was influenced by the Achaemenid (550-330 BCE), Seleucid (312-64 BCE), Parthian (250 BCE-226 CE) , and Sasanian (224-642 CE) empires up to the 7th century CE. The Arabian conquest of Gīlān contributed to the development of an independent government until 1567. In the late 16th century, Shah Abbas I brought the region under Persia's control. In 1907, Great Britain and Russia, who had economic interests in the region, divided Iran to three regions, with Gīlān being the Russian zone. After the Russian Revolution the Bolsheviks took control of the region and established Soviet Socialist Republic of Gīlān. Finally, in the treaty of 1921 Gīlān was given back to Iran. |
