Note: Originally founded and planned by Ardashir I, the first Sassanid emperor, the walls of the ancient city of Fīrūzabād form a complete circle, with streets that run outward into the countryside. The modern city of Fīrūzabād, a few miles from the ancient site, is known for its surviving ancient architecture (3rd century CE), which includes several castles, the most well-known bening Qala-i Dukhtar, Ardashir's fortress. The city is also known for being the home of Arabic lexicographer Firuzabadi (1329-1415). |
