Note: Lorestān began its development in the 5th millennium BCE and its name is translated as Land of the Lurs. Evidence of an early society (5th-4th millennium BCE) has been discovered in ancient burial sites, which yielded pottery, baked clay, animal figurines, bowls, and weapons. The frequent depiction of decorative mythological figures, ibexes, and snakes on the objects indicate a relationship established between other societies, perhaps northern Mesopotamia and Shush. From 2700 BCE, the Bronze industry in Lorestān began to grow and trade with other cities began. Lorestān was inhabited by Iranian Indo-European peoples until ca. 1000 BCE. From ca. 1000 BCE to 700-625 CE, it was ruled intermittently by Cimmerians and Scythians. Cyrus the Great incorporated Lorestān into the Achaemenid Empire ca. 540 CE. Currently, Lorestān extends from the Iraqi frontier with Hamadān and Tehrān on the southwest, Khūzestān on the south, and Esfahān on the east. The main industry is agriculture. |
