Note: Site of large Phrygian settlement after fall of Hittite Empire. The city was the capital of ancient Lycaonia and a stop on the ancient Silk Road. It was incorporated into the Roman province of Galatia by 25 BCE, and visited by St. Paul several times. It was invaded by Arabs during the 7th-9th centuries, and later annexed to the Ottoman Empire around 1467. |
