Note: Located on the outskirts of the Northeast Ural Mountains, the region was inhabited since Neolithic times by Finno-Ugric Udmurts until controlled by the Khanate of Kazan, in the 14th-15th centuries. It passed to Russian control in 1552, during the reign of Ivan IV the Terrible. |
