Note: On the River Nene 75 miles north of London. The town grew around a monastery dating to 656 CE and is noted for its cathedral in the Norman style (begun 1118, completed 14th century) containing the grave of Catherine of Aragon. Town used to be a brickmaking center; modern economy is based on diesel engines, steam turbines, bricks, and foodstuffs. Peterborough was once considered within the boundaries of Northamptonshire.
