Note: Located on Lago Petén Itzá; was capital of Itzá Indians, who successfully held off Spanish conquest until 1697. Today it is a processing center for rubber, sugar, and cacao grown in the hinterland. Access to city was difficult until an airport and roadway were constructed. The ancient Maya ruins (with hieroglyphic inscriptions) exist on the same site as the town itself.
