Comanche Indian Reservation (historic site) |
Note: This was the historic Indian reservation stewarded by the Comanche Nation. It was established in accordance with a federal treaty on August 30, 1855, when approximately 540 southern Comanche people settled on the reservation, the location of which was selected by Major Robert S. Neighbors. Due to myriad social and political factors, however, Major Neighbors recommended the abandonment of the Reservation on March 29, 1858. Orders for the dissolution of the Reservation were officially issued on June 11, 1859. By 1901, when the federal government implemented the Jerome Agreement, Comanche peoples were relocated to Indian Territory and the former reservation lands were broken up to be purchased by white entrepreneurs and settlers of the area. |
