Francia (historical region) |
Note: Originally referred to the area around Paris; then meant region between Rhine and Seine rivers under Merovingins (476-750 CE); under Carolingians, meant smaller area bounded by Aisne, Oise, and Seine rivers; in 10th-11th centuries was limited by Oise, Nonette, Beuvronne, Seine, and Marne; the nucleus of this area was kernel of modern French state, as seat of Hugh Capet, king of France in 987, and thus the beginning of consolidation of monarchy. |
