Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. The reservation spans approximately 4,700 acres spread between three different sites in Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties, Michigan, as well as St. Joseph County, Indiana. Though the Potawatomi, from whom the Pokagon Band descend, have occupied present-day Wisconsin, Southern Michigan, northern Indiana, and northern Illinois since before European contact, its citizens were forcibly relocated west of the Mississippi River to Kansas upon the passage of the 1830 Indian Removal Act. This forced removal to Kansas, commonly known as the Potawatomi Trail of Death, contributed to the death of approximately 500 Potawatomi citizens. However, a group of Potawatomi were able to remain in the tribe's Michigan lands as signatories on eleven treaties during the 18th and 19th centuries. The Pokagon Band purchased land in Silver Creek near present-day Dowagiac, Michigan, where they resided in two communities for decades; the Pokagon band, however, did not have federally-designated reservation lands until 1997, three years after the Pokagon Potawatomi people gained federal recognition. At this time, the Band purchased their three settlement sites on which for increased reservation development. In an effort to uplift the epistemic authority of Indigenous knowledge systems and engage with Indigenous peoples' Right of Reply, ethical collaboration with the tribal chairperson's office and/or cultural center is highly encouraged for the most authoritative information about tribal reservations.
