Note: Alsace-Lorraine is the frontier region between France and, variously, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. Germany and France have disputed the territory since 1871. It was administered in three divisions under the German Empire, 1871-1918. The Treaty of Versailles ceded it to France in 1919. Germany occupied it from 1940 to 1944. At present it comprises six departments of France - Haut-Rhin, Bas-Rhin, Meuse, Vosges, Muerthe-et-Moselle, and Moselle. |
