Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians (LRBOI), the political successor to nine of the nineteen historic bands of the Great River Ottawa people. The reservation spans approximately 2,785 acres in Manistee and Mason Counties, Michigan. Though the Grand River Band, from whom the LRBOI descend, traditionally resided in villages along the Pere Marquette and Manistee River systems, the LRBOI were not granted a federally-recognized reservation on their homeland until 1836. In 1855, treaty rights were changed. At this time, descendants of the LRBOI established a major settlement known as Indian Town near the present-day village of Custer, Michigan. Much of this land was subsequently lost by 1894. In August 2000, the LRBOI was able to purchase a portion of the original Indian Town lands, which now comprise the reservation's boundaries. |
