This site was originally a town of ancient Lydia, at the crossroads of major trade routes; colonized 280 BCE by Seleucus Nicator; incorporated into kingdom of Pergamum 190 BCE; visited by Caracalla 215 CE; one of Seven Churches of Asia Minor; later under Ottoman Empire. |
