Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the White Earth Nation, one of six Ojibwe members of the larger Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The reservation spans 829,440 acres of prairie, rolling hills, and lakes/rivers in Mahnomen, Becker, and Clearwater Counties, Minnesota; it comprises distinct communities including White Earth, Pine Point/Ponsford, Naytahwaush, Elbow Lake, and Rice Lake. The reservation was established in 1867, when a Treaty created the reservation as a home for the state's entire Ojibwe and Lakota populations. While some Indigenous groups choose to settle on this reservation, most did not. Currently, the majority of reservation land is owned by private, non-Indian individuals; only 10% of the land base is owned independently by the tribe.
