Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians. The reservation spans 71,294 acres near the Valley of Fire State Park in Clark County, Nevada. Though the Moapa Paiutes lived in southern Nevada since prior to European contact in the 1800s, tribal members were not granted a federal reservation until March 12, 1873. At this time, an Executive Order allocated approximately 2 million acres for the Moapa Band of Paiute Indian's reservation. In 1875, however, an additional Executive Order was passed drastically reducing the reservation's acreage to 1,000 acres. Beginning in 1951, tribal members filed claims to receive compensation for unlawfully confiscated tribal lands; such efforts resulted in the development of a perpetual capital fund for material and economic development on the reservation. Currently, the entirety of the reservation is tribally owned. |
