Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria. The reservation spans 60 acres of trust land in the heart of Wiyot territory, what is now split between the towns of Loleta and Fortuna in Humboldt County, California. It was first designated in 1910 when the United States government purchased 15 acres of land for the Bear River Band of Mattole Indians. While the reservation lost federal recognition in 1958 due to Congress' passage of the Rancheria Act, its status was restored in 1983 through a class-action lawsuit known as the Tille-Hardwick case. The tribe purchased its current acreage in 1991 with a Community Development Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Office of Indian Programs.
