Note: Buddhist temple site, largest religious monument in Indonesia, located about 42 km northwest of Yogyakarta; constructed during the Shailendra dynasty on a hill, nine levels consisting of a base, five square terraces and three upper circular terraces; covered with ash around 1000, discovered by Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1814, restored under the supervision of Dutch engineer Van Erp 1907-1911, and restored again from 1973-1983 under the supervision of the Indonesian government. Included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Borobudur Temple Compounds. |
