Note: Small town in the Drenthe province, and the location of a World War II Nazi concentration camp known as Westerbork. The camp at Westerbork was established in 1939 by the Dutch goverment to house Jewish refugees in Germany. The Germans conquered the Netherlands in 1940, and the camp became a transit-camp in 1942, where Jews were sent to concentration and extermination camps across the region. From 1942 to 1944, nearly 100,000 Jewish prisoners were deported, most of whom were sent to Auschwitz and Sobibór, where they were killed upon arrival. The camp was liberated by the Canadian forces in April of 1945. Today, a memorial center exists at the camp's site.
