Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Coast Miwok and Southern Pomo Tribes comprising the Federated Indians of the Graton Rancheria. The Rancheria was originally established in 1920 when the Bureau of Indian Affairs purhcased a 15.45 acre tract of land in Graton, California for the Marshall, Bodega, Tomales, and Sebastopol peoples. This Rancheria land, however, was removed from federal trust in 1958 resulting from the passage of the California Rancheria Act. When President Clinton signed into law legislation restoring federal recognition to the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria in 2000, the Tribe was promised restoration of its Rancheria land, which had been transferred to three private distributees, now deceased. At this time, the only land still belonging to the Tribe was a one-acre parcel held in private ownership by a Coast Miwok family. In 2005, the Tribe purchased an additional 254 acres of land for its reservation just outside of Rohnert Park in Sonoma County, California. Thanks to research and lobbying carried out by tribal members, the Bureau of Indian Affairs accepted this newly acquired land into trust on behalf of the Tribe in October 2010. |
