Note: Town on the Casas Grandes River, in the northwestern corner of Chihuahua, northern Mexico. When it was settled by the Spaniards in 1661/1662, the area belonged to the Suma Indians. The town's name, Spanish for "great houses," refers to the extensive, multi-storied ruins of a pre-Columbian town nearby.
