Note: Roman frontier barrier extending about 36 1/2 miles (58.5 kilometers) across central Scotland between the Clyde River and the Firth of Forth. Ordered by the emperor Antoninus Pius, the wall was built 142-144 CE by Lollius Urbicus, governor of Britain. The wall was 14 to 16 feet (4 1/2 meters) wide and probably 10 feet (3 meters) high; a ditch 40 feet (12 meters) wide and 12 feet (4 meters) deep ran in front of the wall, and a military road ran behind it. The wall itself consisted of a turf rampart set on a stone foundation. A series of 19 forts, separated by intervals of two miles (3 kilometers), controlled the wall. Construction of the wall extended the northern boundary of Roman Britain farther into Scotland and provided defense beyond Hadrian's Wall, which had been completed some 100 miles (160 kilometers) to the south in about 136. Occupation of the Antonine Wall was interrupted during the northern revolt (155-158 CE), and the garrison withdrew to the more substantial Hadrian's Wall not later than 196. The emperor Septimius Severus arrived in 208 CE to restore order along the Scottish borders, briefly reoccupying and repairing sections of the Antonine Wall; this is why the wall is referred to as the Severan Wall by some late Roman and medieval historians. Traces of the wall and its ditch can still be seen today; intact sections of wall and wall foundations remain at sites such as Watling Lodge and Hillfoot Cemetery and the remains of several forts including Kinneil, Rough Castle, and Bearsden can also be visited. |
