Note: Traditional region of eastern central Scotland, extending from the Firth of Forth, to the North Sea, to the Lammermuir Hills. The name is related to the legendary British King Loth. In the 7th century was part of the Angle Kingdom of Northumbria, until the Battle of Dun Nechtain when the Angles were defeated by the Picts. Lothian was distinct from Northumbria culturally, retaining its original Brythonic Celtic name. Lothian was annexed by the Kingdom of Scotland in 1018. The area produces wheat, oats, potatoes, livestock, and whiskey. Population is concentrated in Edinburgh, Leith, and Livingston cities. As a modern local government region, it was divided in 1996 into the unitary authorities of Midlothian, East Lothian, West Lothian, and Edinburgh. |
