Dai Viet (former nation/state/empire) |
Note: Kingdom of northern Indochina; on the northwest coast of the China Sea in modern northern Vietnam. It was the first truly independent Vietnamese state. The region asserted its independence from China in 939 and became the independent state of Dai (Co) Viet. Dai Viet and Champa, an Islamic, Indianized kingdom on the central coast, fought several wars in the 12th and 13th centuries. Dai Viet eventually absorbed Champa and finally annexed its capital, Vijaya, in 1471. Dai Viet also clashed with the Khmer (Cambodian) state of Angkor, then the greatest power in mainland Southeast Asia. The name Dai Viet is sometimes used as an historic name for the entirety of Vietnam. |
