Note: This is an Indian reservation stewarded by the Cherokee Nation, a federally-recognized tribal entity of the same name. Many of the Cherokee people were forcibly relocated to Oklahoma in the early 1800s after gold was dicsovered on their ancestral homelands. Today, the Cherokee Nation is a sovereign tribal government in what is now the city of Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The reservation spans 124,000 total acres of land within a 14-county reservation area, 61,000 of which are tribally owned and available for development. The Nation's status as a federally-recognized reservation was reaffirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court in the July 2020 McGirt v. Oklahoma and Hogner decisions.
