Note: A city of Palestine, located just north of Jerusalem. It is an ancient settlement, probably earlier called Luz. It is mentioned in the Old Testament, frequently associated with Abraham and Jacob. Chief sanctuary of northern kingdom after division of Israel; center of Amos' ministry; escaped destruction by Assyrians in 8th century BCE; occupied by Josiah 7th century BCE. Recent research suggests that Bethel may possibly have been the actual scene of the events described in the Old Testament as having taken place at Ai during the Israelite conquest of Canaan.
