Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Big Pine Paitue Tribe of the Owens Valley. The reservation spans 279 acres of land in the high desert valley at the eastern base of the Sierra Nevada, in what is now called Big Pine in Inyo County, California. It was first established as part of the Fort Independence Indian Reservation in the Owens Valley reservation system by two Executive Orders passed in 1915 and 1916. The Big Pine Indian Reservation was officially designated by its current name on April 20, 1937. Between 1937 and 1939, the Secretary of the Interior exchanged 3,000 acres of trust property, now belonging to the Nation, for 1,500 acres of level valley, now belonging to the City of Los Angeles. |
