Note: The region comprises rolling hills and ravines, drained by the Volga River and its tributaries. The area was settled by the Chuvash peoples in the 16th century. It was part of the Gorky territory from 1929-1936. The economy is based on potatoes, flax, hemp, pigs, and cattle. The industry developed only after WW II. |
