Note: Inhabited since prehistoric times with Neolithic monuments dating from 2000 BCE. It was the home to Irish missionaries in the 5th century. It was inhabited by Celts, then Norse invasions occurred ca. 800. The Isle of Man was ruled by Norway until 1266, by Scotland until 1377, then by English kings. The indigenous Manx (Gaelic) language is now nearly extinct. |
