Note: The Berkel River flows from Vreden in Germany to Zutphen in the Netherlands, where it converges with the IJssel River. A company was founded in 1644 to make the river navigable but failed. A second attempt was made ca. 1766, but this company too failed to canalize the river. Shipping on the Berkel ended in the late 19th century.
