Note: Town on the terraced bank of the Danube River in northern Bulgaria, about 250 km northeast from the capital, Sofiya. It is one of the largest Bulgarian ports on the Danube. The first settlement on the site dates to the Middle Neolithic period (3000-2600 BCE). Novae, the former ancient Roman castle, was originally a strategic headquarters for the Roman Legion and was built in the first century CE. There are archaeologic excavation sites nearby. There is little information about the town during the First and Second Bulgarian empires (11th-14th century), but under the Turks (15th-19th century) it was an important trade and craft center. During the Russo-Turkish War (1877-1878), it was damaged repeatedly and was sacked by the Russians in 1878. The local industries are chemicals, food, fishing, vine production, and transportation. Svishtov is a university center with a higher institute of finance and economics. A number of noteworthy Bulgarian artists and writers were born here. Noteworthy churches include those of St. Demetrius (1640) and SS. Peter and Paul. In 1988 the population was estimated at 51,682. |
