Note: Yambol is a town in the Burgas region in east-central Bulgaria, located on the Tundzha River, south of the noted Bronze Age settlement of Kabyle. It was under Byzantine rule from the 11th to the 14th century, then became the fortified residence of the Turkish beys or lords of the region under the Ottoman Empire from the 15th to the 18th cenury. Its historic architectural remains include the ruins of a famous mosque. The modern town produces textiles, machinery, ceramics, furniture, and other items. The 1991 estimated population was 99,225. |
