Note: Andorra is a small, ancient principality located in the Pyrenees between France and Spain. Its independence is ascribed to Charlemagne when he recovered the area from the Muslims in 803. Since the 13th century, it has been under the joint protection of France and Spain. In 1981 representatives of the French and Spanish co-princes established a single government here. The official language is Catalan, though French and Spanish are also spoken. The area has much fine pre-Romanesque and Romanesque religious architecture. It has duty-free status as a marketing nation. |
