Note: City in south-central Uzbekistan, Urgench was once the capital of the khanate of Kiva. It was founded when villagers from Kunya-Urgench (80 miles northwest) relocated in the mid-17th century due to a lack of water. It lies along the Amu Darya river, and was known as a trade center.
