Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla tribes comprising the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR). The reservation spans 172,000 acres adjacent to the city of Pendleton in northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington; almost half of this land is privately owned by non-tribal entities. The reservation was originally established through the Treaty of June 9, 1855, which was signed by the United States and CTUIR member tribes. As a result of this treaty, CTUIR member tribes were forced to cede 6.4 million acres of ancestral lands in exchange for the allotment of a 245,700 acre reservation. Fishing, hunting, and gathering rights within the ceded lands were and continue to be maintained by the CTUIR. The allotment process opened reservation lands for white settlement, further reducing the Tribe's land-base. |
