Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Community of Oregon. The reservation spans over 10,000 acres in Yamhill, Lane, and Polk Counties, northwestern Oregon. Originally 61,000 acres, the reservation was established by an Executive Order signed by President James Buchanan on June 30, 1857. Resulting from the passage of the General Allotment Act of 1887, however, the reservation's land-base was drastically decreased to 33,000 acres and split into 270 allotments, many of which were lost to non-tribal settlement. An additional 25,791 acres of the remaining reservation lands were sold by U.S. Inspector James McLaughlin after being declared "surplus." While the Confederated Tribes lost federal recognition in 1954, they regianed recognition through the passage of the Grand Ronde Restoration Act on November 22, 1983 and were granted ownership their current land-base soon after. |
