Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation jointly stewarded by the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians and the Barona Band of Mission Indians. The reservation spans over 15,00 acres of uninhabited land near the city of Alpine in eastern San Diego County, California. It was first established as a reservation for the Native people of the area, mostly Kumeyaay people who became collectively known as the Capitan Grande Band of Mission Indians, through an Executive Order signed in 1875. However, the area's non-Native population increased in the early 20th century, as did the demand for water resources. By 1932, the city of San Diego built a damn on the Reservation, preventing the Native populations from utilizing the area's water resources. When Congress eventually gave the city of San Diego permission to purchase part of the reservation, the Capitan Grande Band of Mission Indians were forcibly displaced from the land and, as a result, splintered into many decentralized reservations. While the Capitan Grande Band of Mission Indians no longer exist due to their colonial history of displacement, the Capitan Grand Reservation remains in the hands of the Band's descendants. |
